  • Community Mediation Centre (CMC)

The 2 Community Mediation Centres (CMCs) operate under the Community Mediation Unit, a department under the Ministry of Law. These centres provide mediation services to help resolve social, interpersonal/relational, community or family disputes that do not involve an arrestable offence (where police are legally empowered to arrest without a warrant) under any written law. Our motto – ‘Building Bridges To Reconciliation’ – aptly reflects the work of the CMCs.

Mediation sessions are conducted by the CMC’s panel of community mediators who are volunteers and respected members of society from all walks of life, different age groups, ethnicities and professions. A majority of them are leaders from grassroots and other community organisations who were chosen for their commitment, passion and dedication to community service. These CMC mediators are able to conduct mediation sessions in a variety of local languages and dialects. Thus, the CMC is able to appropriately match mediators with the relevant skills and experience to handle the community dispute at hand.

Mediation at the CMC offers the following key benefits:

    • Private and confidential
    • Saves time and cost (Each mediation session usually lasts between 1 to 2 hours and the dispute can be resolved within one session. The only cost to be incurred is a $5 administrative fee, which will be paid by the complainant.)
    • Flexible and informal
    • Seeks win-win solutions
    • Preserves post-conflict relationships

Some examples of common disputes that the CMC handles are as follows:

    • neighbourhood disputes
    • family disputes (excluding family violence)
    • disagreements with friends
    • stallholder/owner squabbles and
    • arguments between strangers

If you are unsure whether your case is suitable for mediation, or if you are interested to register for mediation, please approach the CMC by calling our hotline, 6325 1600. Staff will evaluate and advise on the suitability of each case for mediation.
